Current Therapies
What are the current treatment options?
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is a cancer treatment that targets rapidly dividing cells. It works by targeting DNA of these cells, so that it can damage it, or by stopping the cell cycle/mitosis. This can damage many of the surrounding cells, making it a dangerous treatment.
Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy is an intense type of cancer treatment that uses beams of intense energy or strong X-ray waves to destroy the tumor that is in the body. This method is precise, as the beam is pointed directly at the cancer to destroy it. However, this is seen as dangerous because it can cause even more mutations in the genome.
Surgery is the straight removal of the tumor. This can be seen as an effective process, but the tumor has to be easy to remove and small enough. Also, necrosis of the cells can lead to other cancer cells in the surrounding area, they will get more materials and nutrients to grow.
Surgery (Hysterectomy)
Summary
Lack of specificity
Most treatments are unable to target cancer cells effectively
Nearby healthy cells near the tumor cells usually undergo cell death
Surgery can leave behind cancer cells that can travel to other parts of the body
